"My artwork, over the past few years has explored fire as a metaphor for the South African process of transformation and the purging of the landscape to make way for new growth. It became an ironic personal symbol when fire burnt down the Artist Proof Studio March 2003, taking with it co-founder and teacher Nhlanhla Xaba .

"Through the Wire, Lowveld Fires" refers back to the series of that I have been working on using fire and smoke as a metaphor for social change in South Africa. The fire symbolizes a process of burning and purging to make way for new growth, while the smoke chokes and suffocates the truth. The introduction of barbed wire in this series represents a barrier that recalls the symbolic landscape of apartheid. There is a tension between the transparent layering and political deception or betrayal of the broken promises of a "new South Africa".

The smouldering remains and the smoke after the fire conceal and pollute the clarity of the truth. There is always the belief that smoke will lift and clear, sometimes revealing a scorched and tragic beauty. Fire transforms from one state to another. I have learnt that healing and regeneration can emerge from the ashes. I have also learnt that the sparks that ignited the blaze are also sparks that fuel new beginnings. Some seeds need fire to germinate. Perhaps Mandela’s rainbow nation is a dream worth dreaming.
