Print dealers can be found in most of the major cities of South Africa such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria. These print dealers serve a segment of the general art market in South Africa which is only a relatively small market but still many print dealers have established formidable reputations.
Print dealers can be divided into two groups in South Africa. The first have established galleries and regularly deal with the general public. The second work as agents and buyers for various corporate and private collectors. Some print dealers are a combination of the two.
There is only one gallery in South Africa that focuses on works on paper; this is The Art on Paper Gallery in Melville, Johannesburg. Alet Voster established Art on Paper in 2000, and most of the exhibitions at the gallery have focussed on various print techniques. The Artists' Press has contributed to many of these exhibitions and has held a celebratory ten Years of The Artists Press exhibition which was held in 2001. The exhibition showed a selection of work produced at the print shop over the years as well as being the launch of Nadine Gordimer's "Ultimate Safari" artists book.
Art on Paper represents many artists from all over South Africa and all of the prints printed at The Artists' Press are available through this print dealer. Alet and her team take great care of the work that they sell and one can be assured of professional service at all times. The gallery also has a select collection of books related to South African artists who work in print as well as general books that relate to art in South Africa for sale. They sell the Kuru Art Project calendar and Bittercomix when these are available. Recently the gallery has also branched out into publishing prints.
The Gallery on the Square in Sandton shows a combination of paintings, ceramics sculpture and work on paper. Through their wide network and years of experience they have developed a reputation, as one of South Africa's most reliable print dealers. They also have works on paper for sale by international artists such as Jasper Johns and Picasso.
The Visual Arts Gallery in Melville and has an extensive range of work on paper by particularly South African artists. They have assisted in putting together many corporate collections and have been a print dealer for The Artists' Press for many years.
